Great schools matter
Written by: Dick Hadley Cranberry Township Supervisor
What makes a community great? As an elected member of Cranberry Township’s board of supervisors, it’s a question I face all the time. Residents tell me they want to make sure Cranberry remains a place where employers want to locate and where people want to raise their families.

No need for speed
Written by: Corey Becker Saxonburg
I travel to and from work on one of Butler County’s busiest stretches of road, Route 8. Driving to work, my doctor’s office or other necessities requires me to use this bustling highway at least five times a week.

Can’t argue with that
Written by: Gino Mariotti Butler
Over the long haul, writing political letters can be a humbling experience. One is foolish to expect plaudits in the aftermath of writing researched letters, but only harsh retaliation. Its purpose is legitimate debate, gathering facts to support one’s case.

Lions Road option
Written by: Bob Neal West Sunbury
I was reading in the Butler Eagle about the Bridge crossing Route 422 at Lions Road. They could build a road past the fire hall and connect it to the 422 bypass, which is only about one eighth of a mile away. The fire vehicles could go east or west on 422 or faster than going over a bridge and getting onto New Castle Street. The bridge could remain open for pedestrians walking to the mall.

Good news was buried
Written by: Susan M. Stephenson Slippery Rock
Did anyone else read the good news in the Oct. 16 Eagle, found on the business page (“Budget deficit lowest since 2008”, page 20), lower inside right where few eyes ever roam, under the “In Brief” heading?

LaVallee backs ACA
Written by: Brian Skibo Hermitage
The Affordable Care Act is a personal issue to me. In February 2012, I was diagnosed with an inoperable and incurable brain tumor. I was just like you or your children, going to work each day, paying for my insurance, thinking nothing bad would happen to me because I was a young invincible.

It’s your duty
Written by: Cora Matchett Middlesex Township
It is the duty of all registered voters, whether Republican, Democratic or independent, to vote. Our men and women in the military have fought many wars and conflicts to ensure our right to vote, and many do not take advantage of that right.

What’s improved?
Written by: Dean Berkebile Cranberry Township
Once again, a Pennsylvania legislative cycle ends with no reduction in the nation’s most bloated legislature, no property tax reform, no legislation that corrects the inequities in public school funding or putting state employees on a 401-K plan like the rest of us. Once again, we are all part-owners of a bunch of liquor stores.

Kelly touts local roots
Written by: Chas Tanner Butler Democratic Committeeman
I received Congressman Mike Kelly’s recent glossy mailer touting his hometown heritage. I don’t think that qualifies him to be our congressman. For three years, he has not held a public meeting so that we may be heard. He prefers a teleconference and screening out those he does not wish to speak.

Penny-wise is prudent
Written by: Patrick May Butler
The Oct. 8 Butler Eagle editorial (“Centre City could stumble without adequate parking”) compares those who don’t believe it is fiscally wise to build the Centre City parking garage to a penurious, penny-wise and pound-foolish old man. Fair enough, but there is a different perspective.
