ADAMS TWP — Joey Prentice checks all the boxes for a quarterback.
As North Catholic coach Pat O'Shea likes to put it, he's “shifty.”
The junior's talent was showcased Friday night as the North Catholic football team rolled past Burrell, 66-8, at the Mars Athletic Complex in Class 3A Allegheny Conference action.
“There are so many different elements that you have to make check marks next to when you're a quarterback,” O'Shea said. “Joey is very dangerous running. He would be very hard to plan for.”
Prentice threw for 297 yards and three touchdowns, while running for 108 yards and three more scores, including a 65-yard sprint.
“I pulled it and had great blocking on everybody else's part and that's what happens,” Prentice said, chuckling while talking about his big night.
Prentice and the Trojans wasted no time, forcing Burrell into a three-and-out on the first possession of the game.
Prentice threw the first of his TD passes when he found Nick Maher for a 38-yard TD less than two minutes into the game.
The Trojans attempted eight straight passes between their first two drives, which was a good indicator of what the team was going to execute for the rest of the game.
“We saw some opportunities on film, and so we thought we would come out and throw a little bit,” O'Shea said. “We kind of just followed our game plan, but that was all on offensive coordinator Barry Murray and he did a phenomenal job.”
Burrell scored it's only points of the game off a 31-yard pass from Alex Arledge to receiver A.J. Corrado, which was followed by a successful 2-point try.
“Our kids played hard,” Burrell coach Shawn Liotta said. “But now we just have to strap it up and get ready to go for next week.”
After a 28-point first quarter and a 17-point second quarter, North Catholic triggered the mercy rule running clock entering the second half.
Maher led the Trojans with seven receptions for 134 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
The Trojans (4-0) have a bit of a game that is personal coming up against South Park after losing to the Eagles in the WPIAL playoffs last year.
“We want to come back, get some revenge and look good because we are feeling good, as you can tell,” Prentice said.
“Last year it was a great game; they're physical,” O'Shea said of South Park. “I think for us it will be our first true test against a power running team, which we need to see how we do against that.”
