Slippery Rock University has named Terrence Mitchell as a special assistant to the president for diversity and inclusion.
SRU President Bill Behre said, beginning Aug. 10, the school will share Mitchell with Edinboro University, where he works as the chief diversity and inclusion officer.
Through the partnership, Mitchell will be working part time at SRU in helping to strengthen the school’s strategic diversity planning; to assure the success of students; and managing SRU’s efforts in creating a more inclusive environment for students and employees.
He will also serve as a resource to relevant presidential commissions to enhance, facilitate and coordinate diversity efforts.
Before working for the State System of Higher Education, Mitchell was chief diversity officer at the State University of New York at Oneonta, where he led the development of the college’s first strategic diversity and inclusion plan and helped to increase participation in the annual Student Diversity and Leadership Conference.
Before joining SUNY Oneonta, Mitchell spent 12 years at Allegheny College in Meadville, where he served in various roles, including director of diversity affairs, associate dean of students and assistant to the president for institutional diversity. Earlier in his career, he served as director of San Francisco State University’s Student Activities Office and as associate director of student support services at the University of Oklahoma.
Mitchell earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Central Oklahoma and a Ph.D. in Administration and Leadership Studies at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
