The first brewer in Butler County was named Tourism Ambassador of the Year at the county Tourism and Convention Bureau’s monthly meeting Thursday.
The award was bestowed on Bob McCafferty, who, with his wife, Jodi, opened North Country Brewing Co. in Slippery Rock 15 years ago. They also own North Country Canning and the Harmony Inn.
“We are proud to award the Tourism Ambassador Award to Bob McCafferty,” said Jack Cohen, tourism bureau president.
A news release from the tourism bureau said McCafferty was selected as Tourism Ambassador because he is community oriented.
McCafferty donates part of his profits from a selection of his beers to both a local volunteer fire company and hospitality workers.
He also holds an annual Brewfest that has so far raised $50,000 for Slippery Rock Development, which helps maintain the borough’s appearance and upkeep.
McCafferty is a former board member of the tourism bureau and the state Restaurant and Lodging Association (PRLA).
He and Jodi in 2017 received the PRLA Eco-Hero Award. McCafferty goes to great lengths to ensure the hospitality industry is represented on a state and federal level, according to the news release.
At the meeting, the board also chose a new executive board of directors.
New executives on the board are Ed Tanski, chairman; Nancy MacFarlane, vice chairwoman; Wil Taylor, treasurer; and Rich Hixon, secretary.
Audrianna Bly is the new accommodations representative; Erica Sabitini will represent restaurants; Patricia Stagno is the arts and culture representative; and Jennifer Ford represents history and heritage at the tourism bureau.
