Sadie Hawkins dance set Feb. 8

ADAMS TWP — Mars Area High School Student Council will offer a Sadie Hawkins Dance from 7 to 9 p.m. Feb. 8 at the school.

Tickets are $10 per student and will be available for purchase through Feb. 7. Checks may be made payable to “Mars High Activity Fund.”

A completed ticket order form must be turned in at the time of ticket purchase. Students who do not submit a completed ticket order form will not be able to purchase tickets.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the family of 3-year-old Ford Bartle, who was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 Nueroblastoma and is undergoing treatment at a cancer center in New York. No ticket refunds will be granted.

In the event of inclement weather, the dance will be rescheduled for Feb. 15.

Students compete in academic games

ADAMS TWP — Several Mars Area students competed in the Academic Games League of America “Presidents Tournament,” held Jan. 9 at Slippery Rock University.

Eighth-grader Declan Abbey placed in the top 10 percent in the middle school division and sixth-grader Bryce Zatchey placed in the top 10 percent in the elementary division.

Other participants included eighth-grader Nameer Dheen, seventh-graders Kendall Bruns, Addison Nailler and Natasha Narasimhan and sixth-grader Ava Girdwood.

In the competition, students were asked to answer questions regarding the personalities, historical contexts, political decisions and other facts about the first 17 U.S. presidents. The competition, open to students in grades four through 12, brought together more than 375 students from Butler, Lawrence and Mercer counties.

Runners sought for Kids of Steel teams

ADAMS TWP — Mars Area School District students in kindergarten through sixth grade are invited to join the district's Kids of Steel running teams.

Team members will be asked to run a total of 25 miles (or about 1 to 3 miles per week) and to record their miles at home.

Participants will then join in the 1.2-mile Chick-fil-A Pittsburgh Kids Marathon to be held at 9:30 a.m. on May 2.

When registering, students should enter “Yes” in the “Are you participating in our Kids of Steel program?” field; then, in the next field, students select “Mars K-6th.”

College savings information offered

ADAMS TWP — Mars Area High School guidance office will offer a “Preparing to Pay for College” parent program at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the high school.

The program is open to parents of students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

Speakers will include a representative of the Pennsylvania Treasury, who will offer information on the Pennsylvania 529 College & Career Savings Program, and a representative of Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency, who will discuss financial aid, federal assistance, loans, forms and more.
