MARS — Mars has some spook-tacular plans this Halloween.
The Mars Area Business Association and Chamber is working with local businesses to host “A Martian Halloween” this year on Grand Avenue. It’s the first community Halloween extravaganza of its kind in Mars.
“We’ve done something in the past through the Kiwanis,” Mayor Gregg Hartung said.
But when the Kiwanis disbanded last year, the borough didn’t have a public Halloween celebration.
“A Martian Halloween” features a special home and business decoration contest. A grand prize of $100 will be awarded to the scariest, best decorated home or store front. Participants are asked to decorate their location by Oct. 21.
“It helps people show pride in their community,” Hartung said. “It also brings visitors into (town).”
Additional prizes will be awarded at the Oct. 26 Halloween event on Grand Avenue. Prizes will be awarded for best, scariest and most original costumes. Food, drinks and entertainment will be provided.
Hartung recognized the business community for its involvement in planning. Speaking as a “Martian,” Hartung said he expects the event to be successful and family-oriented.
“(It’s) just kind of a fun time,” Hartung said. “It’s good stuff.”
The event will run from 6 to 8 p.m.
