Mars Area School Board

ADAMS TWP — Mars Area School Board approved several items on Sept. 10. Board members met in executive session before and after the meeting to discuss personnel, student and legal issues. The board approved:

- $43,724 in middle school construction change orders, leaving $187,591 in the contingency fund

- Hiring Stacie Sill as a secretary at Mars Area Centennial School, effective immediately

- Kimberly Thomas and Susan Schietroma for family medical leaves, used intermittently during the school year

- Kids-of-Steel Marathon program for kindergarten through sixth grade at no cost to the district

- An agreement with Kennywood to host the school picnic June 22, 2020

- Appointing PNC Capital Markets as the underwriter for upcoming bond sales to refund the general obligation bonds (Series of 2015).

PNC was the lowest of three bids at a rate of $2.75 for 1,000 bonds. Board member William Pettigrew voted against the measure.

- Joshua Montgomery as a bus driver for A.J. Myers & Sons.

- Paul Becker for a Level 1 district maintenance position.

Coaching positions/Supplemental posts

The following coaching positions and supplemental salaries were approved by the majority. Board President Dayle Ferguson and member John Kennedy voted against the measure.

- Rob Carmody as head varsity boys basketball coach at a rate of $7,233; Paul Rubish as assistant varsity boys basketball coach at a rate of $5,059; and Scott Pfeiffer as assistant varsity boys basketball coach at a rate of $3,150

- Bill Cress as head ninth grade boys basketball coach at a rate of $3,987; Mark Varlotta as assistant ninth-grade boys basketball coach at a rate of $3,114; and Michael Baumgartel as a volunteer high school basketball coach

- Joe Graff as head eighth-grade boys basketball coach at a rate of $3,987 and Mark Murphy as head seventh-grade boys basketball coach at a rate of $3,987

- Dana Petruska as head varsity girls basketball coach at a rate of $7,233 and Ted Gross as assistant varsity girls basketball coach at a rate of $5,059

- Robert Jox as head varsity wrestling coach at a rate of $7,233

- Robert Williams as head junior high wrestling coach at a rate of $3,987

- Todd Slobodnyak as head varsity swimming and diving coach at a rate of $4,546; and Maria Misenhelter as assistant varsity swimming and diving coach at a rate of $3,547.
