ADAMS TWP — Run the ball.

That was the theme for the Mars football team as running back Teddy Ruffner collected three touchdowns on 195 yards rushing in a 28-6 win over West Mifflin Friday night at the Mars Athletic Complex.

“The whole O-line played great,” Ruffner said. “They opened holes the whole game — other running backs blocked well, just overall a great game.”

The junior scored Mars' first three touchdowns of the game.

Ruffner got on the board late in the first quarter with a 33-yard run. He added a 15-yarder in the second, and capped his scoring with a monster 85-yard run at the end of the half to give Mars a 21-0 edge.

“We knew that Teddy could take over,” Mars coach Scott Heinauer said. “He's done a great job, but our offensive line did a great job blocking for him.”

West Mifflin came out in the second half with one objective — stop Ruffner.

Ruffner had 184 yards at the half, but only managed 11 yards in the second half.

“I thought we came out in the second half and pretty much contained (Ruffner),” West Mifflin coach Rod Steele said. “Offensively we came out strong, but then we had some kids end up cramping up on us.”

The Titans got their only points of the game on a 22-yard pass from senior Jaylen Dukes to Mondale King halfway through the third.

Toward the end of the third, the Planets answered back with a 26-yard run from quarterback Drew Schlegel.

Mars completed just one pass in the game on just four total attempts. Nick Spotti had the only reception for four yards early in the first quarter.

“Running the ball is what we do,” Heinauer said. “They're a good football team, but we made a lot of mistakes too, but were able to cause some turnovers and capitalize.”

Dukes went 9-23 for 138 passing yards and one interception. The leading receiver was Ni-Keese Hodges-Demery with 68 yards.

“We wanted to stretch the field because we feel we got some guys who can go get the ball,” Steele said. “I thought we had early opportunities, but we didn't take advantage.”

Schlegel helped pave the way for the non-section victory in the second half, totaling 39 yards on the ground off seven carries.
