JACKSON TWP — Some books from Ryan Gloyer Middle School will soon find new homes in Ohio.

“The district, from time-to-time, approves books for disposal,” said Linda Andreassi, Seneca Valley School District's communications director. “Disposal is a broad term and doesn't mean they are all thrown away.

“We often donate them.”

The book disposal is outsourced to BrightStar, a company from Akron, Ohio, that provides access to and ownership of books for “limited-resource children in the Greater Akron region,” according to its website.

The middle school's librarian will review the books and determine their viability based on condition, age and book circulation. Books that don't meet the standards of these criteria or are identified as obsolete or outdated will be set aside for the school board to approve their removal.

BrightStar was chosen to handle the disposal because it is willing to take on a larger part of the donation process, according to Andreassi.

“Previous donations to organizations required us to separate the books depending on subject matter (and) condition, and then deliver them,” she said. “This company expressed a willingness to take all of the books, regardless of subject or condition, and is coming out to pick them up.”
