Because breast cancer is so common — one in eight women will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime — the Passavant Hospital Foundation will offer a seminar about the topic, in recognition of breast cancer awareness month in October.

On Oct. 18, people can take questions to the “Breast Cancer and You” presentation, which will focus on breast cancer screening protocols and the latest treatments.

“Being educated on this issue can help people with their self care, but people should attend for themselves and for the women they care about,” said Fey Morgan, Passavant foundation president.

Morgan said cancer is the No. 2 cause of death in the community.

Passavant Hospital Foundation partners with the Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) north campus to offer events like this one that provide the most updated medical information.

The seminar, which is free to the public, will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the CCAC north campus, 8701 Perry Highway, McCandless.

Speakers will include Dr. Terri-Ann Gizienski, Dr. Kiran Mehta and Dr. Jennifer Osborn of UPMC Passavant.
