CRANBERRY TWP — A homeowner’s dog has died in an early Sunday morning fire that started in the basement of a home on Franklin Road. Fire Chief Brian Kovac of the Cranberry Township Volunteer Fire Co. said the fire broke out at 4:30 a.m. Sunday morning at 7340 Franklin Road. Flames were coming out of the basement when firefighters arrived at the scene. Two members of the Marner family were home when the fire started at the two-story home. Kovac said the father and his adult son were able to get out safely. He said the family’s dog died in the fire. Kovac said the fire got behind the walls in the house that was built in the 1920s. A quick response by firefighters allowed them to limit the damage to the basement. There was some smoke damage to the rest of the house. Kovac said the cause is still under investigation, but does not appear to be suspicious. He did not have a damage estimate. Cranberry firefighters were assisted by Adams Area Station, Zelienople, Marshall Township and Big Knob from New Sewickley, Beaver County, along with Cranberry EMS.
