SV golf squads get started

Seneca Valley girls golf coach Lynn Wagner's message to her team this season is "Believe and Achieve."
The 11th-year coach has good reason to be optimistic about 2010.
The Raiders return the top two players from last year's 9-5 team in seniors Jenn Suder and Paige Wojdyla, who have been named Seneca Valley's co-MVPs the last two seasons.
"We have two legitimate number one golfers," said Wagner. "We just couldn't make a distinction between the two the last couple of years because their averages have been so close.
"We had a team about 10 years ago that would be comparable to this year's," added Wagner.
Senior Stephanie Bullis is a strong No. 3, something many teams do not have.
"She has worked really hard to bring her game up another notch," Wagner said of Bullis.
Senior Catherine Bellich, junior Jaelyn Arrington and freshman Alex Steighner add depth to the varsity team.
SV will once again golf its home matches at Connoquenessing Country Club.
The team will compete in the WPIAL's Division I, Section I along with Shaler, North Allegheny, Butler and Pine-Richland.
"We're pretty well positioned to compete with the better teams in our section," said Wagner.Seneca Valley Boys
A youth movement has taken over the Raiders in 2010.
The program returns just two lettermen — seniors Mike McNulty and Tim Martin — from the 2009 squad that went 10-4 and tied North Allegheny for the section title.
"We've got a nice crop of young golfers coming up from the junior varsity team," said SV coach Steve Mayes. "I don't want to single any of them out at this point, but it's going to come down to how they are able to adjust to the courses and playing against varsity competition."
McNulty and Martin have done their part to lead by example.
"The young kids see the leadership they are providing," added Mayes. "Those two will be a significant part of our success this year."
The Raiders' Division I, Section 3 foes include Shaler, North Allegheny, Pine-Richland, New Castle, North Hills and Butler.
SV's home course is Cranberry Highlands.
