The Butler County commissioners on Aug. 18 moved forward on several projects, including renovation work at a borough park. The commissioners awarded a $75,458 contract to Mahoning Builders in New Castle to replace two walls at the Zelienople Community Park restroom. The next lowest bid was nearly $8,000 higher. The project is fully funded by the borough's 2009 state Community Development Block Grant. The county administers CDBG funding, so the commissioners' approval is needed for municipal projects relying on that money. • The commissioners also awarded a $46,930 contract to Santa Maria Landscape in Apollo, Armstrong County, to make curb cuts to sidewalks in Connoquenessing so they will be handicap accessible. The next lowest bid was nearly $7,000 higher. • The commissioners also shifted unused CDBG money to help pay for the replacement of McKracken Bridge on McBride Road in Brady Township. • They added $70,000 from 2007 and 2008 grant money originally designated for the county's costs to administer grants and $30 remaining from a 2006 project to replace the gutters and downspouts at the VOICe shelter in Cranberry Township. Wendy Leslie, the county CDBG administrator, said even small amounts should be used because it would otherwise be returned to the state. The original amount allotted to the McKracken Bridge project was $110,000. Leslie said the $70,000 is needed to pay the job's actual cost.
