SV won't waive penalties

JACKSON TWP — Two unnamed businesses in the Seneca Valley School District will have to pay the penalty on their taxes.
The board was preparing to take action on a number of items in one vote when Eric DiTullio requested it vote separately on the denial of real estate tax penalty waivers for two businesses.
DiTullio said one business, which requested waivers of $316.71 and $265.31 in penalties for paying its taxes after Nov. 30, pays 18 tax cards, and two were overlooked in an accounting error.
DiTullio worried the business might rebuff school booster associations that approach it for donations or assistance because the penalties were not waived by the board.
He said the taxes are paid and the waiver request represents the first time the business has been penalized because its taxes were paid after Nov. 30.
"I truly believe that was an oversight on someone's part in that organization," DiTullio said.
Welsh said the other business requesting a waiver of a $454.51 penalty suffered a fire, and because property was destroyed, there was some confusion regarding the payment of the taxes to the district.
Board member Sally Hanley said if the board makes an exception for one or two taxpayers, more people will complain to the board about paying penalties.
Board President Robert Hill asked district business manager Lynn Burtner if she still recommended the waiver requests be denied after having heard the board's various comments.
"Yes I do," Burtner said.
The waiver denial involving the business that had property destroyed in a fire passed unanimously. The two other waiver denials passed 7-2, with DiTullio and James Welsh voting no.
