After losing the renewal of one grant relating to domestic violence, Butler County hopes to keep another grant.
The county commissioners on Feb. 17 approved the application of a two-year federal grant worth $400,000 for domestic violence cases.
The county district attorney's office and VOICe would split the money if the grant is awarded.
The county regained this Arrest grant in 2008 after losing it in 2007. Now it is seeking a two-year renewal.
However, the county this year lost a STOP Violence Against Women Grant, which reduced revenue to the district attorney's office and VOICe.

Prison demolition
The commissioners gave approval to seek bids for the demolition of the former prison on Vogely Street.
County officials previously discussed the possibility of erecting a new office building at the site.

Court videoconferencing
To expedite some family court hearings, videoconferencing units will be installed in county courtrooms 1 and 7.
The commissioners approved buying the two units worth a total of $10,000.
Tom Holman, deputy court administrator, said the units will enable family court hearings involving prison inmates or some people living out of state to occur without those individuals having to travel to the courthouse.
Using another courtroom that already had this equipment, family court has had a hearing involving a person in Florida who had access to a site there with compatible videoconferencing capabilities.
State funds will pay for the units.

Marcellus shale
The county is trying to increase its revenue from natural gas exploration.
The commissioners approved seeking proposals from companies wanting to produce natural gas from Marcellus shale that is under county land.
The county has up to 540 acres available for natural gas exploration.
Most of the land, 370 acres, is at Alameda Park off New Castle Road. Another 170 acres is at the Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center complex off Morton Avenue in Butler Township.
The proposals would be for a company to lease the land.
