ZELIENOPLE — The Butler County Tourism and Convention Bureau thought it was going to have to give back money to the state, but now it won't have to.
The estimated state budget shortfall of $450 million has Gov. Ed Rendell's cabinet officials asking agencies to return money to the state they have received from the state for the 2009-10 budget.
Tourism groups were on the list, but because the Butler County bureau had already spent its $48,000 in state funding on marketing contracts, the state does not expect anything back.
Jack Cohen, the bureau's executive director, said he found out Jan. 29 at a tourism meeting in Philadelphia that Butler County is in the clear.
"I have found out that if we requested the funds for certain projects and that we have contracted or already paid for those, we will not have to pay back the funds, and thankfully we will not have to pay back the $48,000 as we requested to use those funds for projects we have either contracted or paid for," he said by e-mail.
