EVANS CITY — The borough's park authority might pursue several projects this year if it gets a grant from Butler County. Cindy Caldwell, president of the Evans City Park Authority, said she applied for the grants herself without the help of grant writers or other officials. She applied to the county's park renovations grant run by the county commissioners, a yearly program that provides funds meant to renovate existing recreational areas. Caldwell said the authority would pursue five projects in EDCO Park that would cost about $8,000. Evans City would contribute about $2,000 of that money, while the grant would provide the rest. The grants will be awarded by the end of May. Grants like this are extremely important to the finances of the park, Caldwell said, because it is essentially free money given to an entity that doesn't get support from many other places. "We're an authority," she said. "Parks and recreation boards, most of those are funded with tax dollars, but we're not. We do get help from the borough, but there's no tax base that supports us, so we're always out there raising money. That's why this is a big deal." She said the projects would involve installing a hot water system for the pool's building and bathrooms and buying new trash cans because the old ones are in violation of code requirements. The new trash cans would be plastic and more sanitary, according to Caldwell. The park authority also is looking to buy energy efficient lights for the park. Caldwell said the current lighting system is outdated and on a timing system, which means they turn off sometimes while it is still dark. The new lights will remain on and shine brightly for children whose bus stop is close to the park.
